STERCULIACEAE
Composite Family
Ayenia filiformis
S. Watson
Trans-pecos ayenia
The petals of this plant are hard to recognize as petals with their extremely long and threadlike claws and with their apices adnate to the staminal column. A plant (not in New Mexico) of notable economic importance in the family STERCULIACEAE is Theobroma cacao from which chocolate is derived.
