B. hisida is the only member of the genus north of Mexico. It is one of three ferns in southwestern New Mexico with essentially pentagonal blades (see Notholaena standleyi, Pentagramma triangularis). Bommeria can be distinguished by the presence of needlelike hairs on the adaxial surface.
