PTERIDACEAE

(Maidenhair fern Family)

Astrolepis sinuata (Lagasca ex Swartz) D. M. Benham & Windham subsp. sinuata

Wavyleaf cloak fern

(Fertile diploid or apogamous triploid)
The pinnae of A. sinuata are deeply and fairly symmetrically lobed, the lobes somewhat narrow and acute. The adaxial surface is quite sparsely sprinkled with basifixed finely ciliate scales, the body of which is scarcely wider than the cilia. The subspecies sinuata is an apogamous triploid and quite common in the dry southwestern part of New Mexico. The subspecies mexicana is occasional in southeast New Mexico.
