This subspecies, like A. limitanea subsp. limitanea is an apogamous triploid. Subspecies mexicana is distinguished from subspecies limitanea by the fact that its proximal pinnae are 1/4 to 1/3 the length of the blade, while the proximal pinnae of subspecies limitanea are 1/2 or more of the blade.
